Moving day in New Jersey is rarely a calm event. Between packing, paperwork, and the U-Haul deadline, it’s easy to overlook the details. You may even forget about your kid's favorite stuffed animal. However, the truth is that the final cleaning is crucial. It stands between you and your full security deposit if you're a renter or a smooth closing if you're selling. NJ landlords and buyers are particular, and rightly so. They expect a clean home because they are paying for it.

This move-out cleaning checklist for NJ renters and homeowners will guide you through every room. It highlights the spots inspectors notice first and what often gets missed by those doing it themselves. You can print it, save it, or send it to whoever is helping you on moving day.

Kitchen

The kitchen is where landlords and buyers scrutinize the most. Grease and food residue are common reasons deposits get docked. Here’s what to clean:

  • Inside the oven, including racks and the inside of the door glass.

  • Inside the microwave (top, sides, and turntable).

  • Inside the refrigerator and freezer — empty and wipe every shelf and drawer.

  • Stovetop, burners, drip pans, and the range hood.

  • Backsplash and walls behind the stove.

  • Inside cabinets and drawers (remove every crumb).

  • Cabinet fronts, especially around handles.

  • Countertops sanitized.

  • Sink, faucet, and disposal cleaned and shined.

  • Floors swept and mopped, including under the fridge and stove if they pull out.

  • Trash can wiped inside and out.

Bathrooms

Bathrooms are second only to kitchens in inspection importance. Soap scum, mildew, and ring stains can be deal-breakers. Here’s a detailed list:

  • Toilet inside, outside, base, and behind the bowl.

  • Tub and shower scrubbed, including grout lines and shower door tracks.

  • Tile walls and floors.

  • Sink, faucet, and vanity countertop.

  • Inside vanity drawers and cabinets.

  • Mirror and any glass surfaces.

  • Light fixtures and exhaust fan dusted.

  • Towel bars, hooks, and toilet paper holders wiped.

  • Floor mopped, including behind the toilet.

  • Trash emptied.

Bedrooms

Empty bedrooms reveal everything your furniture used to hide. Ensure you clean the following:

  • Closets emptied and shelves wiped.

  • Closet floors vacuumed or mopped.

  • Closet rods dusted.

  • Walls spot-cleaned for marks, scuffs, and tape residue.

  • Baseboards hand-wiped.

  • Window sills and tracks cleaned.

  • Blinds dusted.

  • Light fixtures and ceiling fans dusted.

  • Outlets and switch plates wiped.

  • Floors vacuumed or mopped, including corners and under where furniture sat.

Living Areas and Hallways

These shared spaces show wear faster than people realize. Here’s what to focus on:

  • Dust every surface, including baseboards, door frames, and crown molding.

  • Wipe doors and door handles.

  • Clean light switches and outlet covers.

  • Vacuum vents and registers.

  • Wipe windowsills and clean inside-window glass.

  • Spot-clean walls.

  • Vacuum carpets edge to edge, mop hard floors.

  • Clean inside coat closets and any built-ins.

  • Remove all cobwebs from corners and ceiling.

Laundry, Garage, and Extras

These areas are easy to forget — and easy for inspectors to spot. Don't overlook these tasks:

  • Inside the washer and dryer (lint trap fully cleared).

  • Behind the appliances if they pull out.

  • Garage swept, oil stains spot-treated where possible.

  • Patio, balcony, or deck swept.

  • Storage closets emptied and wiped.

  • Light bulbs replaced where burnt out.

  • All trash and personal items removed from the property.

What NJ Landlords Look For During Inspections

NJ landlords and property managers typically follow a similar inspection script. They start in the kitchen, checking the inside of the oven and fridge first. Those are the two biggest deposit-killers in the state. After that, they examine bathroom grout, the toilet base, and tub stains. They walk through every room checking for:

  • Carpet stains, hair, or pet odor.

  • Wall scuffs, holes, and tape residue.

  • Dirty baseboards and door frames.

  • Dusty blinds and windowsills.

  • Trash, debris, or personal items left behind.

  • Light bulbs out or fixtures full of dust.

Under NJ's Rent Security Deposit Act, your landlord generally has 30 days to return your deposit with itemized deductions. The cleaner the unit, the smaller the deductions. This means you will see your money back faster.
